From
the Artist...
Chalkware by Teddi
Knapp,
New York State Documented 20th Century American Folk Artist
Chalkware starts as an
original molded or carved figure. They are then reproduced via a
molding process. An unpainted snowman or Santa, right out of the mold, can
be used to mark on a blackboard, hence the name "Chalkware."
The snowmen, Santa's, and others are created, produced, and finished
completely by my hands. I enjoy my work, and I love sharing them
with others who appreciate folk art.
In a little cabin is where
I make my Chalkware and live primitively in the mountains in the state of
New York. This is where I am inspired to work on new designs and
other hobbies. Live primitively in these days of high-tech?
Well, I really enjoy it. Cooking and heating with a wood stove,
candles and oil lamps for light, ice box instead of a refrigerator, no
indoor plumbing...these things are just the tip of the iceberg. To
go to town, I saddle up the horse or hitch up the buggy. A sleigh in
the right weather gets us over the river and through the woods. My
horse named Star is one of my top ten best friends. Hobbies,
too! I collect very old things, which are probably not fancy
adequate to be called antiques. And there is art. I've been a
painter and sculptor for 42 years. About 12 years ago, I
started the collection of snowmen and Santa's. A dear friend,
Laurie, put some of my Santa figures in her shop; they were soon sold and
it's never stopped since.
In the future I plan to
offer other forms of my work. By choice I live in a slow and calm
environment. Clocks, calendars, TV, newspapers, and radio don't
interest me. Each piece of my work takes a certain amount of time
and I will not take short cuts to produce my snowmen and Santa's.
