New York
Folk Artist Appears at Accents for Signing
Folk Artist Teddi Knapp Debuts Signature Snowmen, “Fred” and
“Rick”
October
24, 11-3 and October 25, 10-3
Documented Folk
Artist Teddi Knapp will
appear at a local downtown Frederick shop, Accents at Shab Row,
for an exclusive signing of her original chalkware folk art
pieces. She will appear at Accents
(122 N. East Street) on Friday, October 24 from 11am-3pm and
October 25 from 10am-3pm. At the event, she will debut her new
snowmen designed exclusively for Accents, “Fred” and “Rick.”
“We are
delighted to welcome Teddi to our store and town, especially
since it is so rare to get the opportunity meet with this artist
in person” says Accents owner Marie Hamilton. “We fell in love
with Knapp’s pieces over 15 years ago when we first started
carrying her work. Her collectible pieces are very popular
because of their quality
and original designs.”
Knapp has been
recognized by the New York State Department of Historical
Preservation for her folk art. Her signature chalkware pieces
begin as an original modeled or carved figure. They are then
reproduced via a molding process. An unpainted snowman or Santa,
right out of the mold, can be used to mark on a blackboard,
hence the name "Chalkware." The snowmen, Santas, and others are
created, produced, and finished completely by Knapp’s own
hands. Each piece is numbered, has a certificate of
authenticity, and the artist’s signature is etched into the
figure.
According to
Knapp, “By choice I live in a slow and calm environment.
Clocks, calendars, TV, newspapers, and radio don't interest me.
Each piece of my work takes a certain amount of time and I will
not take short cuts to produce my snowmen and Santa's.” She says
her inspiration comes from her primitive lifestyle, explains
Hamilton. She uses a wood stove for cooking and heating,
candles and oil lamps for light, and an ice box instead of a
refrigerator.
As a painter
and sculptor for over 42 years, she has produced hundreds of
original pieces. In recent years, she produced signature
snowmen exclusively for Accents, including Shab, Row, Accents
and Country. Accents is the only store authorized to sell these
snowmen.
According to
Knapp, “I enjoy my work, and I love sharing them with others who
appreciate folk art.” Teddi Knapp snowman and Santas are
currently available at Accents, with new snowmen available on
Friday and Saturday during her signing.
